It surprises me that people could miss so many warnings in so many places. All the way through the purchase process there are prominent warnings that no physical product will be supplied. I find it difficult to understand how people could make the mistake, though.

Again, you and I see a clear difference between just getting a PDF and this site, but a new user who is just trying to read the 3rd chapter of DMG here instead of in his physical book may not realize just how different the two are in terms of how they have to be executed by the producers.

Doubly so of you are used to other game companies like Chaosium giving you a free PDF with the hard copy. If you think WOTC owns the site, and you already paid WOTC for the hard copy, then it feels like a ripoff if WOTC is charging you to re-purchase something they already sold to you.

The confusion leads to the thought that it's a ripoff. I don't think it's enough that people are justified in calling this site a rip-off or any such, but I can see some of the confusion. Personally, I thought it was part of the same company when I first joined, especially as I was using my voucher from the Essentials kit to do so. It is probably a little rich for DDB to complain about people confusing them for a part of WotC when the branding is so close. (Most of the people complaining probably don't even know there is a combat tracker yet, as they are very new to the site.) Again, I'm not saying they're right - but I think the complaint here is about the ability to read what you already bought, not necessarily the ability to do things like roll digi-dice or use a combat tracker.

People expecting it are not crazies.Īlso, I suspect that many of those who complain would not argue that they should get the character sheets and encounter builders and maybe even the search features for free due to buying the hard copy, but that they should get reading access to the books. I am simply pointing out that the idea that you should get electronic book access as part of a deal with buying the hard copy is not as out there as some people here seem to think. I am not in any way saying that a searchable engine and character sheets and an encounter builder (that kind-of works but is in perpetual beta) is equivalent to just an electronic file like a PDF. Both RPG companies, and also comic-book companies and DVD/Blu-Ray producers. Other companies who give you an e-copy when you buy a physical product. The question which my post was answering is where the idea that buying a hard copy gets you an e-copy comes from, and my response was - this is where it comes from. I am saying that there is a precedent for companies providing electronic access to their rules in some form, when you buy the physical copy. I'm not arguing that there is no difference. A cross referenced set of sources, with integration into an advanced toolset, deserves to be a separate, first class product.

However, that is very different to giving access to a suite of digital tools like DDB, even if DDB was owned by WotC. I would even go so far as to say that DDB should supply a PDF version of the sources when you purchase on here, if only as a backup in case DDB go bust. For your first point, I agree that WotC should probably give a free PDF version of their books along with a physical purchase.
